At Colourific Coatings Ltd, we receive many questions from our clients. We suggest you to keep this FAQs page bookmarked so that you can refer back for your future needs. Here, you can find answers for some of the most frequently asked questions which you may also have about powder coating services.
What is powder coating?
Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing dry powder. The coating is applied electrostatically and is then placed under heat to allow it to cure and form a film. It is usually used to create a hard, durable finish that is tougher than conventional paint and more resistant to abrasion and corrosion compared to liquid coatings.
Is powder coating environmentally friendly?
Yes. The powder coating application consists of dry matter only, and hence involves no emissions into water or air. Liquid paint applications require an evaporating VOC (volatile organic compound) and cleaning solvents. Our powder coating finishes can be used in all LEED-certified and green building projects.
What are some examples of powder-coated items?
We are surrounded by powder-coated parts: fencing, patio furniture, store shelving, metal furniture, light fixtures, appliances, and bridge materials are all examples of items that are commonly powder coated for superior corrosion resistance and durability.
What advantage does powder coating offer over wet painting methods?
There are several advantages to powder coating over conventional liquid coatings:
Are there different types of powder?
The two main types of powder coatings are thermoplastic and thermoset. In each of the two, there are a variety of subgroups. The most popular among thermosets are polyester and epoxy. Epoxy is best for indoor or chemical-resistant applications. It provides a hard, highly durable, and shiny finish. Disadvantages appear, however, when it is exposed to UV light – these items tend to chalk and dull over time. Polyester coatings weather well, look great, and are resistant to abrasions.
What does your powder base consist of? Do you apply Teflon®?
We coat with polyester, polyurethane, epoxy hybrid powders, polyethylene, and nylon. Our process requires powder to be electrostatically applied and cured in an oven with temperatures reaching 400°F. Unfortunately, we cannot coat with Teflon® (polytetrafluoroethylene) as it requires a curing temperature greater than 400°F.
Teflon® is a trademark or a registered trademark of DuPont™ or its affiliates.
I am looking for a very specific colour; how large is your selection?
As custom powder coaters, we can match thousands of colours using our many powder suppliers, and our large in-stock selection. With high, medium, and low gloss, metallic, standard RAL, textured, and clear powders, there is no limitation on the selection of powder coating finishes available.
What colours do you do most often?
We have “standard colours” which we run more frequently. These include black, white, grey, and bronze, all in their high-gloss form, as well as semi-gloss, matte, sandex, metallic, and vein finishes.
What is the maximum size and weight that you can powder coat?
The maximum size that we can coat on our conveyor line is 3’ wide x 6’ tall by 30’ long with a maximum part weight of 1500 pounds. Our batch system can handle parts sizes of 8’ wide x 8’ tall x 30’ long with a maximum part weight of 5,000 pounds.
How quickly can you turn my work around?
Depending on the colour, number of pieces, and our work schedule, it is possible to turn jobs around on the same day. However, in general, coating takes about three to four business days after the product arrives. We will provide you with the fastest turnaround time possible when we quote your job.
Do you provide chemical or mechanical removal of previous finishes?
We do provide sandblasting services. Our sales department can determine if this is appropriate for the material being powder coated.
Is it necessary for materials to be shipped to Colourific Coatings Ltd to be processed?
Yes. Customers are responsible for shipping their products (ready to be pre-treated and powder coated) to Colourific Coatings Ltd unless other arrangements are agreed upon.
Do you do any wet painting or chrome plating?
No. We only apply powder coatings to metal substrates. Powders can be colour matched to any colour including chrome finishing.
